Inveterate pride rids Bottom at park | Columnists

One morning, at “2:45 a.m.,” according to Dr. Harvey L. Brown, “783 M.D.,” Mississippi State Department of Health Vital Records, the writer was born at “459 East Second Street,” inside the corporate limits of the City of Laurel, Jones County, Mississippi, in front of “the field,” near cow pastures. That address is indelibly etched in the writer’s mind. On Thursday, Dec. 28, it was rehashed with Johnny “Chubby” Scott and his wife Geraldine, who were close neighbors.
The existing address at 460 East Oak St. is directly north of where 459 E. 2nd was. It was about 150 yards west from the cow pasture that was east of the dead end at 467 E. Oak St. (Ms. Bertha Mae Lindsey), adjoining Paul Smiley’s pasture, when all of the streets north of East 2nd were dead ends up to East 5th St., which led to Valley Farm/Slaughter Pen before Hilbun Poultry moved from Walters Avenue to where Wayne Farms is now.
